Fulcrum Bioenergy has purchased 11 acres in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center to build the first commercial-scale production facilities for converting municipal solid waste to ethanol.

The cost of the Fulcrum facility is $120 million and will include four separate buildings. Construction is set to begin later this year.

Fulcrum, based in Pleasanton, Calif., was launched early last year. It develops next-generation ethanol production in the United States.

When the plant comes on line in 2010, it is expected to produce approximately 10.5 million gallons of ethanol per year, and to process nearly 90,000 tons a year of municipal waste that would otherwise have gone to landfills.

The property is located on Peru Drive in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center and the plant is the first of several projects that Fulcrum is currently developing across the country.

Fulcrum's process is expected to be environmentally benign; utilizing a gasification process that does not create significant levels of emissions like today's waste-to-energy incineration technology.
