The Carson Race Track, which is, with care, destined to become the best and most attractive in the state, is greatly in need of improvement. The trustees should have it plowed before the hot, dry weather sets in. A greater supply of water is also needed there, which could most likely be had from Warm Springs, if the state will bear the expense. If the state determines to carry water to the Orphan's home, it can bring it there, too.

The Owyhee is at present the only mine worked at Tuscarora, the condition of the roads in that district having caused a temporary shut down at the Dexter.

This afternoon Governor E.P. Carville announced the appointment of Peter A. Burke of Reno and Denver Dickerson of Carson to membership on the state board of publicity. Members will serve on the board without pay, but will be allowed mileage and other expenses.

50 years ago

Most of the state's 2,300 classified employees will receive pay hikes ranging from five to 15 percent.

Scoutmaster Fred Atkinson of Carson City and troop leader Marion Ellison of Gardnerville received the Silver Beaver Award from the Nevada Area Council Boys Scouts of America, Reno at a recent recognition dinner.

Ed Johnson shows great respect for his country and fellow man as he puts up the American flag, weather permitting, every day at the senior center. It is one of the duties he has along with helping with the newsletter and filling in as Meals on Wheels delivery driver. He's the center's volunteer of the month.

- Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
