Carson High School senior Emma Robinson chose a senior project with a great deal of influence from her grandfather, Harvey Robinson.
Robinson, who lives in Texas, recently had a pacemaker implanted, which inspired Emma to hold a fundraiser for the American Heart Association.
February is associated with the heart and flowers. Emma is adding pizza to the mix, calling her fundraiser "Hearts, Flowers and Pizza." The fundraiser is from 5-9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 at Straw Hat Pizza, 127 Clearview Drive.
"I also did a personal interview with my grandpa," Emma, 17, said.
A senior project requires the student put a minimum of 20 hours into their project, do a research paper " Emma's was on the pacemaker " make a portfolio logging their project hours and have a mentor sign off on items, making sure the senior has completed them.
"My mentor is Angila Golik," Emma said.
Emma will have information booklets from the American Heart Association on each table available to diners. There also will be decorations and a raffle for prizes.
"The information on the tables will include how to limit your eating while out, so you can make it more healthy," she said.
"I have a lot of raffle prizes. I went to area businesses that donated things, like a blanket from Boot Barn, a set of wine glasses, a variety of things."
After graduating from Carson High School, Emma plans to attend Western Nevada College and transfer to the University of Nevada, Reno, where she will "probably" study to become a teacher.
"I hope people will attend to help a good cause," Emma said of her fundraiser.
Fifty-percent of all food sales generated by the fundraiser will be donated to the American Heart Association's education programs for heart disease and stroke. Proceeds will be donated from dine-in or take-out orders.
