Alcohol is believed to be a factor in an accident Wednesday night that left two people critically injured and a mangled truck resting against the garage of a northeast home, according to a Carson City deputy.
Resident Donna Hulett said she and Cliff Jones were inside the home at 2104 Darla Way at about 7 p.m. when they heard a loud "thump."
"Then I looked out the front window to see the truck against the house," Hulett said.
Outside she and Jones found 45-year-old Steven Rack lying on the ground writhing in pain. He was able to tell the couple he crawled out of the truck once it stopped.
A short time later, Hulett said, she and Jones discovered driver Tim Marshall, 28, barely conscious and laying next to a large tree, both legs severely injured.
Sheriff's Deputy Nathan Brehm said it appears the GMC Jimmy was southbound on Gregg Street when for unknown reasons Marshall swerved to the right, barreled through the cul-de-sac and struck a tree. The impact, said Brehm, sheared the driver's door off the truck and yanked Marshall from the cab.
The truck then slammed into the garage causing an undetermined amount of structural damage.
Both men were taken from the scene to a Reno hospital by Careflight helicopter which landed in the cul-de-sac.
Brehm said Rack was critical but stable and Marshall's injuries were critical.
"He was so badly injured he was unable to speak," he said of Marshall.
A blood draw will be taken at the hospital to determine if Marshall, who allegedly smelled of alcohol, was under the influence, Brehm said.
