Attend a retirement party for Guy Rocha

In honor of State Archivist Guy Rocha who will retire Feb. 2 after serving as the Nevada State Archivist for 28 years and working for the State of Nevada for 32 years, a reception and diner will be Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson Street. No host cocktails 4-530 p.m.; dinner and presentation 5:30-9 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person. Checks should be made payable to Teri Mark, c/o the Guy Rocha Retirement Fund and mailed to 100 N. Stewart Street, Carson City NV 89701. Proceeds from this event will be donated to the State Library and Archives Gift Fund to help continue the efforts Guy spent his career building. No state funds will be used for this event. Children's Theater holds auditions

Wild Horse Children's Theater will hold preliminary auditions for the annual "Capital City Idol Talent Competition," 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson St. The competition is open to performers ages 6-17 for singers, dancers, musicians, gymnasts and other solo variety acts . No duets or groups. Silver Springs

Free tax preparation for seniors

AARP will offer free tax preparation for seniors. Taxpayers wanting their taxes prepared and electronically filed for free do not have to be AARP members or any specific minimum age. Beginning Sunday, Feb. 1 through April 15 representatives will be at the Silver Springs Senior Center, 2795 Fort Churchill Road, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday. Appointments are required.
