A 14-year-old boy struck by a car at Fifth and Stewart streets was taken by Care Flight helicopter from the field at the Boys & Girl's Club about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputy Thomas Miller said Christopher Barchus was crossing Fifth Street in the crosswalk when Esther Cardarelli, 74, of Minden made a left onto Stewart Street from eastbound Fifth Street.

"She said she didn't see him," said Miller.

The impact sent Barchus into the windshield, where he smacked his head hard enough to break the window. He landed in the road.

Cardarelli allegedly helped him into her vehicle and was going to take him to the hospital when witnesses urged her to stay put, said Deputy Sal Acosta.

Miller said the boy had walked from Carson Middle School and was crossing the road to go to the Boys & Girls Club when the accident happened.

Barchus was conscious and alert when paramedics arrived.

Miller said because of the head injury, the teen was taken by helicopter to the trauma center in Reno as a precaution. The boy was treated and released.

Cardarelli was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian, said Acosta.
