ELWIN ELYPHLET HAYWARD

NOV 1, 1926 - JUN 21, 2009

Elwin Elyphlet Hayward was born in Gouldsboro, Maine, to Harold and Rhoda Hayward. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. A longtime resident of Modesto, Calif., he worked at Sharpe Army Depot for 31 years. In 1979, he retired to Carson City where he worked at the Mother Lode Casino and drove a shuttle bus for the Ormsby House.

Elwin was an excellent auto and motorcycle mechanic. He spent many hours working in the pits at the car and motorcycle races. He also enjoyed Little League Baseball and, while living in Modesto, was involved with Sylvan Dads Club/Bel Passi Baseball. He also had his favorite poker machine at the Carson Nugget in Carson City.

Elwin is survived by Fern, his wife of 63 years; sister Bernetta Thompson of Bangor, Maine; children Gary Hayward (Nancy) of Modesto, Mike Hayward (Deborah) of Reno, Nev., Brenda Cutchall (Lester) of Carmi, Ill., and Michelle Potter (Richard) of St Peters, Mo., He also leaves six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Morris and Lloyd, daughter Kathy and granddaughter Wendy.
