Nevada Appeal Staff Report

Just when things looked like they might be looking up for the Fallon baseball team Saturday afternoon, the Greenwave suffered a tough break.

Junior pitcher Teryn Smith had keep Fallon in game two of a doubleheader at Douglas through four innings, but some extra effort while trying to avoid a tag on the base paths actually ended his afternoon prematurely.

Fallon had cut the score to 6-4 in the top of the fifth when Smith, who had four strikeouts in as many innings pitching, grounded back to Douglas pitcher Kameron VanWinkle and turned his ankle while trying to avoid the tag at first.

He came out of the game immediately and Douglas proceeded to score six runs over the final two innings to take a 12-4 win and complete a three-game series sweep of the Greenwave. The Tigers claimed a 12-1 win in five innings earlier in the day and beat Fallon 13-0 in Fallon on Thursday.

"We played a much better game in game two today," Fallon coach Robbie Wickware said. "We still have things to work on, but we stayed more consistent.

"A lot of credit goes to Douglas, they played well for three games. Teryn was throwing a pretty good game. Douglas hits the ball very, very well but he was throwing a lot of strikes and more than one pitch for a strike. That's what allowed him to keep us in the game for a bit."

Fallon got out to an early 1-0 lead in the game when Smith doubled Colton Oney home in the top of the first.

Douglas answered in the bottom of the inning when Tyler May scored on a two-out passed ball from third and took the lead in the bottom of the third when May hit a solo home run and VanWinkle hit a two-run single to set the score at 4-1.

Oney hit a leadoff home run to left in the top of the fourth, cutting the score to 4-2, but Douglas came back again with a two-run bottom half.

Van Winkle (2-0) took the win for the Tigers, striking out six and walking two in six innings of work while Smith took the loss.

Van Winkle and Tyler Hoelzen each drove in a pair of runs while May and Jeff Crozier had one RBI a piece for Douglas.

Oney finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs in the game to lead the Greenwave.
