About 20 residents who live in the Goni Road area in north Carson City came together Saturday morning to clean their neighborhood.

The area along the road has, in the past attracted a lot of illegal trash dumping, according to Craig Holmes, president of the Goni Canyon Preservation League.

"Everyone here realized that this area was getting trashed and wanted to do something about it," Holmes said.

This is the fifth year for the cleanup effort. Holmes said the first couple of years where the toughest, picking up all the accumulated trash from the past. But as they cleaned the area, they noticed that less people were leaving their trash there.

"The more we clean, the less gets dumped," Holmes said. "Once a year we do this, and it kind of brings the community together. Even on a light cleanup day, we'll take out 15 or 20 pickup loads, and we'll be done by noon."
