WNC Concert Choir free performance

The Western Nevada Concert Choir, under the leadership of Bill Zabelsky, presents its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sarah Winnemucca Hall in the Aspen Building. Admission is free.

For the past eight years, Zabelsky has brought outstanding choral music to audiences in the Carson City area. This year is no exception as the Western Nevada Concert Choir presents "Americana Jubilee."

The choir will concentrate on American folk music with such tunes as "Another Op'nin,' Another Show," "Black is a Color," "Red River Valley," "Domine Deus," "Finiculi, Finicula" and the title song, "Americana Jubilee," a compilation of folk songs arranged by Linda Spevacek.

The Douglas High School Madrigals also will sing a few traditional madrigal pieces.

Ormsby ARC workers make campus a brighter place

For more than a decade, WNC's Carson City campus has been a better place to work, thanks to the efforts of the Ormsby ARC, which provides support and services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Five hardworking ARC employees pick up recycling material, shred documents, collect outside trash and help set up for special events. They also can be found dusting and sweeping, helping the regular janitorial and maintenance staff at the college.

Patty LeClaire is their supervisor, and she's worked for OARC for 15 years, first at the thrift shop and now at the college.

"It's very rewarding to see people improve their self-esteem and reach their goals," she said. "Having a job improves their self-worth. They've chosen to work and it's nice to support them."

The college pays for part of their salary, which also is subsidized by a state training program. A few of the workers have gone on to work for private companies, and others have been with the program for 10 years or more. WNC faculty and staff are appreciative of the fine work done by the OARC team, who are considered a key addition to the WNC family.

Kindergarten prep school available

The WNC Child Development Center is offering a "Kindergarten Prep School" this summer to help children be more socialized and ready for a structured school day in kindergarten. Activities include supervised cooking, creating and exploring a dinosaur habitat, making a volcano, water play days, and a field trip to Western's observatory. Children also learn signing of words, vocabulary, and enjoy a book of the month. Kinderkids is available to 5-6 year olds, while pre-K curriculum is available for kids ages 3-5. Call 445-4265 or 445-4262 for information.
