Multicultural Festival promises music, dance, food and fun

WNC hosts the 15th annual Multicultural Festival 11 a.m.-4 pm. Saturday, May 15. The free event offers a fun and colorful experience for all ages. Performances by local talent will showcase rhythmic song and dance by the Brass Ackwards swing band, Mariachi Cazadores, Country Valley Jug Stompers and Reno Taiko Drummers, along with rock and blues, West Coast hip-hop, flamenco guitar, American Indian dance and more.

Exhibits and hands-on activities, along with ethnic food for purchase will be available. The festival opens with a free showing of the provocative documentary film "Nature of Existence," 7 p.m. Friday, May 14 in Marlette Hall, Cedar Building. Director Roger Nygard will be available to meet with attendees and answer questions about the film. For information, call 445-3283.

Choir presents free spring concert

The WNC Concert Choir performs its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sarah Winnemucca Hall, Aspen Building, Carson City campus. Admission is free.

POST Academy runs in honor of officers

Cadets from the Western Nevada State Peace Officer Academy participated in their annual Pride Run from the WNC Carson City campus to the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial at the legislative plaza and back on May 1. During the month of May, members of law enforcement honor fallen officers at memorials and ceremonies throughout our nation.

Carson Sheriff Ken Furlong spoke to the cadets at the memorial about the importance of physical fitness and the role it plays in protecting citizens and officers. He commended the sacrifices officers make and their commitment to serve and protect their communities. Academy graduate Jorge Pierrott and Officer Kevin Earl of the Washoe County School District Police Department ran with the cadets.

Golf tourney to benefit construction club

The Nevada Associated Students of Construction group at WNC is seeking players and teams for a golf tournament Friday, May 21, at Empire Ranch Golf Course. Cost is $85 for individuals or $250 for a four-person team that will include one student from the construction program.

The aim is to help raise funds for the program and mentor students who will soon be headed into the work force. Lunch and gifts will be included. Hole sponsorships also are available for $500, and include sponsor signs and recognition in the tournament program. To register, call 445-3240.

Students elect new leaders on campus

The Associated Students of Western Nevada College welcomes a new president for the 2010-2011 school year. Jason McGill is a graduate of Silver Stage High School in Silver Springs and is studying criminal justice. McGill has been a member of student government organizations for more than seven years, and looks forward to putting his experience and leadership skills to work serving the students of WNC.

Students also elected Ashley Cruz as vice president, Carson campus; Leah Burfield, vice president, Fallon campus; and Ashlee McGarity, secretary. Senators for ASWN in Carson City will be Jose Quiroga, Meagan Machart, Michael Hunter and Christopher Smith.

ASWN is a group of students that works to enhance student life at Western. They organize events on and off campus, support college outreach initiatives, and participate in college committee meetings as representatives of the student body.

Summer, fall registration open for all students

Registration is already in full swing for the summer term and fall semester at WNC. Anyone may now register via Web-REG to secure a seat in class. Already, more than 1,300 students have signed up for the fall term that begins Monday, Aug. 30. In addition, more than 800 have enrolled for the shorter summer term beginning Monday, June 14.
