130 YEARS AGO

General Grant arrived in this city and were received with booming guns and cheering of the populace. Grant spent the evening in the residence of Governor Kinkead before he arrived for his reception at the Capitol. No less than 3,000 persons witnessed Grant. He arrived via the steamer "Meteor" bound for Glenbrook at an estimated 20 miles per hour and then by stage with Hank Monk at the reins.

100 YEARS AGO

Yates, the plumber, is making extensive improvements on the property he recently purchased north of the gas works. His home is completely remodeled and will add materially to the looks of the neighborhood.

70 YEARS AGO

Six students have already been signed for flying instructions in a class to be conducted at the local airport. Already receiving instruction are Melvin Fodrin, Willis Riehl, Ralph Dunlap, Warren Edward, and Earl Corbett. Flights are being made by Ted Morrill, flight instructor, using an all-metal Luscombe high-wing monoplane.

50 YEARS AGO

Sharon Johnson of the state highway department was named "Miss Carson City" in ceremonies at the Nugget by president Jay Flint of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.

20 YEARS AGO

The annual Jaycees Haunted House is in action in house at Mills Park and Saliman Road. Jaycees are also hosting a masquerade party at the Community Center.

10 YEARS AGO

At the Carson theaters: Three to Tango, Crazy in Alabama, Fight Club, Bringing Out the Dead, and Double Jeopardy.

• Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
