The Carson City Board of Supervisors on Thursday will consider directing the city's Office of Business Development and Parks and Recreation Department to operate the Arlington Square ice skating rink again this winter.

Operation would require more than a $135,000 subsidy from the city. According to Parks Director Roger Mollendorf, total expenses for the season are projected to be $262,000, with revenues estimated at just more than $126,000.

Promoters plan to operate the rink for eight weeks starting Friday, Nov. 27.

Last winter, more than 10,000 skaters used the rink at the Arlington Square parking lot on Carson Street. The rink took in nearly $130,000 less than projected, however.

Despite the loss, promoters believe the program provided an economic stimulus to downtown businesses while providing a popular recreational activity for Carson City residents and visitors.

Supervisors are also scheduled to:

• Take another look at an amended ordinance that would change the definition of a pickup truck and address parking in residential areas.

• Vote on two ordinances that would cut water and sewer connection fees.

• Consider awarding a $603,000 contract for construction of the urban fishing pond.

• Hear a proposed amendment to city code from Sheriff Ken Furlong that would allow the city to dispose of unclaimed property through Internet-based public auctions without providing specific notice of a public auction.

• Consider approving a contract for the purchase of two trucks not to exceed about $214,000 for working on multi-lane streets.

• In its capacity as the Redevelopment Authority, the board also will consider approving agreements for assigning vending space for Doppelgangers Bar & Grill, B'Sghetti's, The Carson Cigar Company and Mo & Sluggos as part of the Summer Concert Series "Rock in the Square."

The board meets at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St. For more information, call 887-2100.
