Bill Toler, a former vice president with Procter & Gamble, has been selected as the new chief executive officer of Swift Communications.

Toler assumed the CEO role Tuesday at Swift, owner of the Nevada Appeal, Tahoe Daily Tribune, Record-Courier, Lahontan Valley News and other newspapers, Web sites and publications in Nevada, California, Oregon, Colorado, Nebraska and South Dakota.

"We are very excited to have Bill Toler leading Swift into its next era of growth and development," said Swift owners Marilyn Shelton and Jan Buschert in a press release.

"Bill's laser focus on consumers and his proven abilities to build high-performing teams are just the qualities the board and ownership were looking for in our search. The time we have spent with Bill tells us that his energy and leadership style combined with his track record of developing winning strategies and customer solutions will allow him to lead our company to its full potential."

Toler replaces Dick Larson, who retired last fall. Bob Brown remains as president of Swift Communications, headquartered in Carson City.
