Swill Milk: The Chronicle of Virginia City is trying to clear out the swill milk ranches. It has been five years at work at this thankless task without so much success whatsoever. The Aldermen of the city like it and call it "the nectar fit for the gods," but made of manure and offal. The Carson Valley ranchers produce the best milk anywhere and should step in and control the milk business of the Comstock.

100 YEARS AGO

The demand for horses for cavalry service has cleaned out the ranges of the state and has increased the prices by 250 percent. Horses purchased before the war with Spain were getting $40 each. Now they are over $100.

70 YEARS AGO

Raiding the Western hotel bar in Gardnerville Wednes-day night, agents from the office of George W. Brady, deputy administrator for Nevada, arrested Fred C. Choate and seized a quantity of moonshine liquor and a powder for "spiking" near beer. The raid followed the purchase of liquor by one of the officers.

50 YEARS AGO

Carson City still is rated as the smallest capital in the United States with 5,123 followed by Juneau, Alaska, with 6,344 persons.

20 YEARS AGO

The Iraqi army invades Kuwait.
