The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada Mentor Center is hosting a training and information session at 9 a.m. Aug. 21 at the Boys & Girls Club on Russell Way in Carson City.

The session will include breakfast, and will be over by noon. People interested in mentoring a youth in the community will be given the opportunity to ask questions, get ideas, and be trained as potential mentors.

The Mentor Center was recently awarded a national stimulus money grant through Amachi. It was the only mentoring program in the state of Nevada to receive this funding. The Amachi grant works to service children impacted by incarceration. This includes, but is not limited to, children who live in areas with high crime rates, children who attend schools with high free and reduced lunch rates, and children of incarcerated parents. The number of prisons within Carson City's boundaries makes this grant and program especially vital.

The Mentor Center has been in existence for 10 years, and currently has many children waiting on a list for mentors. A mentor is asked to spend an hour a week for a minimum of a year with their mentee doing things that they like to do in their everyday lives.
