Mentor Center Training and Information Opportunity

Carson City's original mentoring program, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada Mentor Center, will host a session Saturday at the club on Russell Way in Carson City.

The session is 9 a.m.-noon and includes breakfast. People interested in mentoring a youth in our community will be given the opportunity to ask questions, get ideas, and be trained as potential mentors.

The Mentor Center was recently awarded a national stimulus money grant through Amachi. It was the only mentoring program in the state of Nevada to receive this very important funding.

The Amachi grant works to service children impacted by incarceration. This includes, but is not limited to, children who live in areas with high crime rates, children who attend schools with high free and reduced lunch rates, and children of incarcerated parents. The number of prisons within Carson City's boundaries makes this grant and program especially vital.

The Mentor Center has been in existence for 10 years, and currently has many children waiting on a list for mentors.

A mentor is asked to spend an hour a week for a minimum of a year with their mentee doing things that they like to do in their everyday lives: fishing, cooking, reading, hiking, talking.

The positive impact that mentoring has on a child crosses all areas of his or her social, academic and emotional states.

To RSVP to attend the Mentor Center session, call 775-445-3346 or e-mail rgordon@wnc.edu.

End of Life presentation at St. Peter's on Thursday

All are invited to attend an "encore" presentation by Paula Schneider, RN, MPH, on end-of-life decisions and how to communicate with family members about this difficult topic. The presentation will be 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 312 N. Division St.

St. Peter's Caregiver Support Group is hosting this important meeting where, for the minimal fee of a dollar, participants can secure their final wishes.

Call Deb Cash at 887-8846 to confirm your attendance as the last presentation filled up quickly.

Also, anyone that is a caregiver is most welcome to come and meet others that night who understand and wish to help with the resources necessary to care for a seriously ill loved one or friend.
