Birthdays are, or were, being celebrated by Janet Heller, Emmy Heller, Janet Swobe and Clark Morres. But no one celebrates b-days better than M ... lunch at ZBistro, dinners at Adele's and Red's 395, lunch again at the BAC Artisan's Store, and back to ZBistro this week; then to a family party in Smith Valley. Hey, what's not to celebrate? As a friend said several years ago, "It's better to be over the hill than under it." How hopefully true. Yippee!

M is very thankful for friends like Dan Brewster, the Grecos, the Abowds, the Galhauts, the Tate sisters, Terry Ward, her family, and the many people who sent cards. She looooves birthdays.

Unfortunately, while celebrating life, there is also the sorrow of death. Last week, Craig Forster lost his mother, Iris; Danny Coyle passed away; and Terry Beauchamp's best friend was killed in a motorcycle accident in North Dakota (plus, his uncle died). Our deepest condolences to their friends and families.

To lighten the mood ... Ken Fraser sent us this one off the Internet: "A new pastor was visiting the homes of his parishioners. At one house, it was obvious someone was home, but his knocks at the door went unanswered. So, the pastor took a card and wrote 'Revelation 3:20' on it, and left it in the door. That Sunday, he found his card in the offering with 'Genesis 3:10' on it. He reached for his Bible, and went into gales of laughter. Revelation 3:20 begins, 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock.' Genesis 3:10 reads, 'I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked.'" Ken added Proverbs 17:22 "A cheerful heart is good medicine." Amen.

Look up in the skies the night of Aug. 13. There is a triple conjunction with the moon, Venus, Mars and Saturn, as well as the Perseid meteor showers (seemingly emanating from the constellation Perseus in the northeastern skies. FYI, it's really old comet fragments passing by). Take your sleeping bag outside and enjoy the show.

Don't forget to take in "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," at the Brewery Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. July 30, 31 and Aug. 1 (883-1976); there's also the Senior Follies at the Community Center the same weekend. Call the Senior Center for details (883-0703). Wild Horse Theater is presenting "Nick Tickle, Fairy Tale Detective," at 7 p.m. July 30 and 4 and 7 p.m. July 31 (887-0438) at the Children's Museum. It is directed by guest director Jon Josten. Finally, there is a concert at WNC's Sara Winnemucca Hall at 7 p.m. Friday July 30 featuring the great storytelling and music of Tom May and Chris Kennedy. Don't say you have nothing to do this week ... we don't want to hear it.

We tried out Mo & Sluggo's new fare in their restaurant and found it very tasty; onion rings, gespacho, shrimp ceviche, etc ... all yummy; so, too, with the Canyon Creek Grill & Bar on Mica Drive, south of Topsy Lane, in Douglas County. Good eggs benedict with "laquered" bacon (baked, sweet and spicy). The fresh fruit and hollandaise was tasty, too.

Don't forget to learn a lesson from the USDA, NAACP, the White House and the media (from the Shirley Sherrod episode )... get both sides of the story before you open your mouth and insert your foot. Sage advice.
