As beautiful as an alpine setting, as comforting as a lullaby, as universal as first love, "The Sound of Music" is an enduring favorite.

The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company will bring Rodgers and Hammerstein's beloved musical to the Carson City Community Center beginning Friday from May 7-16.

Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 p.m., Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. There is also a Saturday matinee on May 15 at 2 p.m.

Winner of multiple Tony and Academy awards, this musical tells the story of a postulant who proves too high-spirited for the abbey and is sent to serve as a governess for the seven children of a retired naval captain. She brings music back into the home and captures the hearts of the children and their father.

Set against the background of the Nazi occupation of Austria in the 1940s, the family struggles to retain their freedom and their ideals while their father is pressured to join Hitler's naval command.

The story is embellished by some of Broadway's most beloved numbers, including "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," "Edelweiss," and "The Sound of Music."

Maria Arrigotti plays the postulant Maria opposite August Stoten as Captain von Trapp. Jim DeZerga is the lovable but conniving Max and Mitzi Nelson is von Trapp's fiance, Elsa. Carla Wilson plays the Mother Abbess.

Danita Bayer plays the oldest daughter, Liesl. The roles of the remaining six von Trapp children are double cast.

"It is an impressive and engaging cast," said director/producer Stephanie Arrigotti. "They are each incredible performers with distinct personalities, bringing wonderful energy and depth to this beautiful story."

Some 40 performers complete the cast, accompanied by a 14-piece professional orchestra. Gina Kaskie-Davis is the choreographer.

Tickets are $20 general; $18 for students and seniors; and $16 for youth 17 and under and are available at Realty Executives, 1071 South Carson Street or by phone at 775-445-4249.
