Pet owners braved the weather Saturday to bring their pets to the animal safety event sponsored by Michael Hohl Subaru dealership in south Carson City.

Jon Hambleton of Farmers Insurance, who was on hand to snap the digital identification photos for pet owners, said it's a good idea to have photo IDs of pets in case a pet is lost or stolen.

"We've had eight people come by so far, and that's good for this weather," he said. "We do this for the community."

The weekend program was to aid in the recovery of lost pets. The program, E.A.R.S (Electronic Animal Recovery System) stores four separate photos of a pet along with vital identification information.

"This holiday season we are excited to become involved in animal safety," said Matthew Hohl, general manager of the dealership. "Along with Farmers Insurance, Michael Hohl Honda and Subaru are proud to assist in the protection of animals. It's a small way for us to give back to the community."

Sue Albers of Carson City, brought her 5-year-old German shepherd Chyna in for a picture ID.

"Any kind of extra ID you can get for your dog is important," she said. "All our dogs are purebred, and people will steal dogs like these."

Kay Atchison of Carson City also brought in her 8-month-old Doberman pinscher Peyton for a photo ID.

"It's a dog event and we go to all of them," she said. "It's fun for us and it's fun for them."

Trish Vandersluis of the Douglas Animal Welfare Group, said Michael Hohl invited DAWG to join the event so there were five dogs, one cat and two kittens up for adoption Saturday.

"Our shelter is quite full right now and we need to find homes for a lot of nice dogs," she said.

The next DAWG adoption event will be from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Douglas Animal Shelter, 921 Pinenut Road.

This weekend's animal safety event included a variety of activities for families and pets including demonstrations. Local radio station KBUL FM, The Bull, broadcasted live Saturday.

The celebration continues today from noon to 2 p.m. with Alice 96.5 live. Michael Hohl Subaru is at 2910 S. Carson St.
