Carson golfers win fourth straight tourney

GENOA - Carson High's golf team won its fourth consecutive Sierra League tournament Monday afternoon at Genoa Lakes.

Carson carded a 347, 19 shots better than second-place Bishop Manogue. Galena was third at 371 and Douglas, thanks to Bethany Wurster's 4-under-par 68, finished fourth at 398. With just two tournaments left in the regular season, Carson has a four-point lead over Bishop Manogue.

Elayna Shine and Lindsay Burroughs led Carson with 85s. Whitney Nash was two shots back at 87 and Heather Evans was the final Carson scorer with a 90. Allie Vondrak had a nonscoring 95 while Katie Livermore had a nonscoring 102.

The next tournament is Tuesday at Arrowcreek.

VOLLEYBALL

DOUGLAS SWEEPS MCQUEEN

MINDEN - Douglas rolled to an easy 26-24, 25-14 and 25-20 win over the Lancers in a 4A crossover match.

Shannon Dugan led the Tigers again, collecting 15 kills and seven digs. Emily Garcia added eight kills and four blocks, while Keely Latham finished with five kills and two blocks. Brenna White finished with five kills and five digs, and Jackie Harper had 37 assists. Mia Townsell led the Tigers with 11 digs.

Douglas is 15-1 overall and 5-0 in league.

TRUCKEE TOPS DAYTON

DAYTON - The Wolverines knocked Dayton from the unbeaten ranks with a 25-23, 25-15, 23-25 and 25-21 victory in a Northern 3A match.

"It was very intense," Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. "In the second game we lost our momentum a little bit. We missed quite a few serves, and that was detrimental to us."

Jamie Darragh led Dayton with 10 kills two aces and two digs, while Kathie Arias finished with nine kills, three aces and three digs. Madison Foley ended with six kills, four aces and two digs, and Cassie DePew had five kills and four blocks. McKenzie Kielty had two kills and seven assists.

Truckee knocked off Dayton in the JV match, 25-20 and 25-14. Destinee Serawop led Dayton with four digs, while Ashley Vickers and Taryn Schlacta had an ace and three digs apiece.

HAWTHORNE TOPS VC

HAWTHORNE - In a tight match, Hawthorne outlasted Virginia City 23-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-23 in a Northern 1A match.

Jamie Poston led the Muckers with 10 kills, seven digs and three aces. Jill Dupre had six kills, six aces, 12 digs and two blocks, and Taylor Parsons had six kills and eight aces. Denali Fickus had 19 assists, three kills and threeaces.

Virginia City won the JV match 25-19, 23-25 and 15-8. Cori Defebaugh led VC with two kills while Shannon Parsons added a kill and block.

SOCCER

SENATORS BLANK WOOSTER

RENO - The first-place Senators continued to roll, pounding Wooster 7-0, in girls soccer action.

Carson is 4-0-1 heading into Saturday's home match against Bishop Manogue.

Seven different players scored for Carson - Josie Daggs, Brenda Torres, Eliza Matley, Ali Cowan, Kenzie Tillitt, Kaitlyn Holmes and Kate Schulz. Holmes also had an assist.

Carson has scored 16 goals in its last two wins over North Valleys and Wooster.

There is no doubt Carson coach Randy Roser would have liked a tighter game to prepare his team for Saturday's game against Manogue.

"I'd like it to be more consistent," Roser said. "That's high school, though, up and down. We slowed things down. We didn't let the girls run any breakaways. It was more like a practice for us to get things moving."

Arran Rumbaugh played in goal for the Senators, and faced just one shot.

DAYTON KNOCKS OFF WHITTELL

ZEPHYR COVE - Dayton scored twice in the opening 20 minutes and withstood a second-half Whittell rally to post a 2-1 Northern 3A girls' soccer victory.

Sam Langer gave Dayton an early 1-0 lead, scoring in the fourth minute and she then assisted on Maribel Ledezma's in the 19th minute, providing the Dust Devils with a 2-0 halftime lead.

The win enabled Dayton to even its league record at 2-2.

"Any win we can put on with these lake schools is big. It's our first time being in this league, and it's forced us to step our game," said Dayton coach Jared Miklich.

DUST DEVILS BOYSFALL

ZEPHYR COVE - Whittell attempted 24 shots in the opening 40 minutes of its match match against Dayton, making three en route to a 5-0 Sierra League boys' soccer triumph.

Trevor Fairbank, T.J. Kolesnik and Blake Heldt-Werle each found the back of the net for Whittell before intermission.

Following two dazzling saves by Dayton keeper Edgar Diaz, Fairbank beat the Dust Devils' goalie with a 15-yard hard, low shot just inside the near post. Kolesnik hit a 20-yard shot at 25-minute mark. Heldt-Werle capped Whittell's first-half scoring onslaught by bouncing in a 40-yard free kick in the final minute.

Dayton plays at Lowry on Saturday.

TENNIS

CARSON GIRLS WIN TWO

The Carson High girls tennis team won two matches to start off the week. The Senators beat Incline, 13-5, and Fallon, 9-9 (4-2 in tie break), on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

The Carson-Fallon match had to be decided in a tiebreak. To break a tie after the three rounds of singles and doubles, the teams send out their first round matches and they play first to seven, winning by two.

During Tuesday's singles action, Emily Collins went 3-0, dropping only four games en route to winning 6-0, 6-1, 6-3. Ashley Saarem went 2-1 and Emma Kortemeir went 2-0. Sarah Maier lost her match, 4-6, but won the tiebreak, 7-4.

In doubles, Ashleigh Potter and Jessica Fleming went 2-1. It was doubles where Fallon was able to make up some points and force the tiebreak.

In the tiebreak, Collins, Saarem, the aforementioned Maier and the doubles team of Mary Analiza Ong and Katherine Breeding all gained points to seal the match.

On Monday, Carson cruised against Incline, winning 13-5.

In singles, Collins went 3-0, winning 7-5, 6-2 and 6-1 and Saarem was 2-1, winning 6-4 and 6-2. She lost her other match, 1-6.

In doubles, Potter and Fleming and Ong and Breeding both went 3-0. Christina Gallegos and Krista Stocke went 2-0.

Carson, 5-1 in league and 5-2 overall, plays at Damonte on Thursday.

CARSON BOYS TOP FALLON

Thanks to dominant singles play, Carson rolled to a 12-6 win over Fallon. Eight of Carson's 12 points came in singles.

Blake Sly went 3-0 in singles, losing just one game in three sets. J.J. Aragon and Ben Drozdoff went 3-0 in doubles, dropping just four games.

Adam Whitt went 2-0 in singles, losing just one game. Mike Lang won his only singles set 6-4.
