A Carson City man was jailed on theft charges Monday after deputies hid in a closet and allegedly watched him rummage through an elderly woman's night stand.

Kyle Canyon Curtis, 23, was arrested at 9:36 a.m. Monday on suspicion of felony grand larceny and a warrant out of Douglas County for suspicion of felony burglary.

According to the arrest report, a 75-year-old woman on Poole Way reported at 9:30 a.m. Sunday that she noticed some jewelry was missing after Curtis came over to do maintenance work on

Sept. 17.

The woman said that while she was talking with Curtis, he asked to use her bathroom and was inside her home for three to four minutes.

He then allegedly left the house saying he would be back, but did not return.

Officers took the report and were preparing to follow up when the woman called Monday to say that Curtis contacted her saying he wanted to work for her.

Deputies asked the woman to arrange for Curtis to come over, then two officers hid in the bedroom closet.

Through the closet doors, the officers allegedly heard Curtis arrive and ask to use the bathroom, the report states.

The crack in the door allowed them to watch as Curtis allegedly entered the victim's bedroom and opened a night stand drawer.

"The subject moved his hand around in the drawer then pulled his hand out. Nothing could be seen in his hand as he pulled it out," the report states.

Once Curtis left the room, officers confronted him in the garage of the home.

"I then told Kyle I watched as he entered (the victim's) bedroom and got into the top drawer," the report states. "Kyle admitted this and stated he did not have any excuse for doing that."

After being handcuffed, Curtis allegedly apologized to the woman, "begged" her to not press charges and said he would try to recover her jewelry. He also allegedly said he stole the jewelry because he had a drug addiction.

Once in the patrol car, however, Curtis refused to reveal what happened to the three diamond rings and gold bracelet estimated at $10,000, the report indicates.

His bail was set at $25,000.
