Soroptimist International of the Comstock will host the second annual Train Ride event on Aug. 12, with proceeds benefiting the lives of local women and children.

The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. at The Virginia & Truckee train station at F Street in Virginia City, where John Hertzel, owner of Grandma Hattie's Restaurant in Carson City, will serve an array of heavy appetizers and desserts at the station.

The ride departs at 7 p.m. and winds its way to American Flat, returning at 9 p.m.

"This event is how we raise money for scholarships and for women and children in our community," said Dorothy Wingard, club president.

Soroptimist International of the Comstock gives three scholarships every year, one each to a student at Dayton, Silver Stage and Storey County high schools, as well as the Violet Richardson Award and the Women's Opportunity Award. Additionally, it provides assistance to working women who, for example, may require additional clothing for work or support for schooling. And the same applies for children's varying needs.

"There are many little ways we can help, and there's no end to the kinds of requests that come in and ways we try to meet the needs of our community," Wingard said. "We also help on a national and international level through donations when the need arises, as was the case following the tsunami in Japan."

The train ride event takes place during a full moon and offers folks a chance to visit, see wildlife and horses and to experience a part of the area not otherwise accessible.

"Everyone has so much fun every time we do a train ride," Wingard said. "And what better way to combine a great time with raising money for those in need?"

The big raffle prize includes two nights at Harrah's or Harvey's and dinner, with an array of other items to also be given.

Tickets cost $45 and include appetizers and dessert, one drink and a raffle ticket. Additional raffle and drink tickets will be available. Tickets can be purchased from an Soroptimist International member or by calling Wingard at 775-246-2499 or Sharon at 775-246-1630. The F Street train station is three blocks south of C Street in Virginia City.
