Legislature gets 2 more days in Brooks matter

(AP) — The Nevada Supreme Court has given Nevada lawmakers two extra days to answer claims by embattled Assemblyman Steven Brooks that he is entitled to be seated in the state Assembly.

The Legislature’s top lawyer Friday asked the court to extend a reply deadline for nine days, to March 27. Legal staff cited the demands of drafting bills for a Monday deadline in the Legislature as reason for seeking the extension.

But Chief Justice Kris Pickering granted only a two-day reprieve and set a Wednesday deadline for the Legislature to respond.

Brooks was put on leave last month following two arrests and hospitalization for a mental evaluation. Brooks claims the Legislature lacked authority to put him on leave.

Meanwhile, the Assembly could vote next week on whether to expel him.
