The County Commissioners held their first meeting of October on Thursday.

Commissioners discussed and/or approved the following items:

The top discussion at the meeting came from Ron Marrujo, coordinator of Rural Student Services/counselor for Western Nevada College. He expressed his concerns about the west side of the parking lot and the despair it was in. Marrujo stated that there were five known damaged areas in the parking lot on the west side.

Marrujo said the backside of the college has not yet been inspected to see if there is any serious damage there. With the construction of the new road leading behind Safeway and hooking into Auction Road, it will likely take away parking spaces for the convention center and the campus.

Churchill County owns the property that WNC is located on, but it does not own the buildings. The lease that WNC has with the county is in its 31st year out of 50 years.

With the lease drafted in the early 1980s, it is lacking when it comes to specifics as to which party is responsible for certain things said commissioners. After the county reviewed the lease of the property, the commissioners are uncertain to who is responsible for the work.

The commissioners conceded that the lease should be defined and updated. There is an estimate for the project at about $30,000. The commissioners said they would like to continue to explore estimates to find the best deal. They asked WNC officials to do the same to see what is their share. Commissioners finally agreed to move ahead with finding quotes to repair the parking lot and will further discuss the situation once those assessments are completed.

Other business discussed or approved at the meeting is as follows:
