Nevada law enforcement teams are out to find distracted drivers using cellphones and other devices this month.
A spokesman for the Department of Public Safety said Nevada’s ban on using handheld devices while driving has been in effect two years, but troopers and deputies continue to cite offenders every day.
“The law was enacted due to an alarming trend on our roads, with more than 3,500 distraction-related crashes every year in our state,” according to DPS officials.
Officials say the enforcement effort isn’t limited to cellphones. Surfing the Internet, using a GPS or changing songs on an mp3 player while driving are all illegal because they take a motorist’s eyes off the road.
The push involves multiple agencies and will continue through April 20.
