A letter from Johnny Stewart. Sheriff’s Office, Esmeralda County, April 17, 1874. Rev. James Woods — Sir: With a sinking heart of a doomed man I answer your kind letter. I can assure you that it afforded me a great relief to get such Godlike lines. I have constantly read the testament since I received it from you and derived great benefit towards preparing myself to meet my God. I have read a consoling verse in the testament, which I have just put on the table to read your letter (continued on Tuesday).

Let on one hereafter say Nevada girls are delicate creatures and unable to endure the hardships men subject them to. The following are samples of Elko girls. On the third of this month Addie Hunter, Miss Annie Martin, Hugh Martin, his son James and myself took a trip to Martin’s winter range, on the Bruneau River. Of the 10 miles, three were on snow shoe and seven miles on foot.

Commencing at about 1:30 this morning until 9 a.m., there were no less than six distinct shocks of earthquake felt in Carson. The first one was strong enough to arouse people from their slumber.

Nature is conspiring to steadily increase the hazard of range and forest fires in Nevada. A fire season of four months has been proclaimed by Gov. E.P. Carville. The season compares to six weeks as in previous years.
