“A crossword in the back seat of the car. A little jar of jelly beans on the stand. A blanket covered chest full of photographs, A window taking up the entire wall. A tree surrounded by four birds. The four birds chirp songs of memories, giving the hush house harmonies. The birds scavenge the limb While the sun extenuates the dim The birds keep her awake as the clouds begin to break. Later, when night ventures in she will fall into a dream And the four birds will flow into her mind until the morning gleam.” Four Birds, written by Granddaughter, Emily MacDiarmid.

Madeline passed away peacefully at her home with her children at her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob MacDiarmid. She was also preceded in death by her parents Henri and Dora Koeckes, and brother Henry Koeckes.

Madeline is survived by her children Jeslyn MacDiarmid, Tricia MacDiarmid (Cindy Quaglia), Tom MacDiarmid (Bobbie), and Betsy MacDiarmid, and grandchildren Andrew Hagemann, Henry MacDiarmid, Emily MacDiarmid, and Abigail MacDiarmid. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Betty Koeckes, niece Debbie Sharp, and nephew Jon Koeckes. Madeline was blessed with a life well lived being a rancher’s wife, a wonderful Mom, a homemaker, a Grandma, a community volunteer, and a good friend. She was also very proud of her military service being a Navy WAVE during World War II. Services are private with arrangements through the Smith Family Funeral Home.
