Local sports roundup: Tigers rally for win; Whitt is on watch list

MINDEN — Douglas scored four runs after two outs in the fifth inning to break a 3-all tie,and Isaiah Schat and Zac Davies combined to pitch four-hit ball for a 7-3 Northern Division I win over Wooster.

Douglas (5-12 conference, 7-15 overall) has now won three straight games and five of its last seven.

Schat pitched 6.1 innings and allowed three runs on four hits to go with 13 strikeouts and one walk, before giving way to Davies with one runner aboard in the seventh. Davies earned credit for the save as he retired the side on a strikeout and fly out.

Spencer Trivitt hit 2-for-3 with 3 runs scored, Tomas Leitenbauer 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and Haden Keller 2-for-3 to lead the Tigers’ 11-hit attack. Keller walked and scored the go-ahead run on Hadyn Brown’s two-out single in the fifth inning.

Whitt put on watch list

RENO — After matching a program record for saves in a season with 15 games remaining, Carson City junior Adam Whitt has been named to the midseason watch list for the 11th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association Stopper of the Year Award. The honor is given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball.

Whitt — a 6-foot-3, right-handed hurler for Nevada — is one of 39 players overall and one of two from the Mountain West named to the watch list. The NCBWA will announce five finalists for the award on June 3 before selecting the winner during the 2015 College World Series.

Whitt tallied his 13th save of the season last Saturday in Nevada’s 8-5 win over San Diego State, matching Matt Gardner’s 2012 program record for saves in a season. Whitt’s 13 saves rank second in Division I. Whitt trails Nevada’s career program record for saves, set by Rica Lagattuta (1993-96), by just three.

Whitt has made a team-high 21 appearances this season, boasting a 1.93 ERA. He’s allowed just six earned runs in 28 innings pitched. Whitt has struck out 34 batters compared to just four walks.

Whitt’s 13 saves this year are four more than any other reliever in the Mountain West.

The 22nd-ranked Wolf Pack return to Peccole Park this weekend, hosting San José State for a three-game series, April 24-26. First pitch times are set for 6 p.m., 2 p.m. and 1 p.m. at Peccole.

Douglas sweeps Carson

The Tigers’ boys and girls swept the Senators in a dual swim meet in Minden.

Douglas won the boys meet 215-92 and the girls meet 194-111.

The only CHS win in the boys meet was by Dagen Kipling in the 500 free (4:58.09). Tallon Rauch was second in the 200 free (2:01.70) and the 200 IM (2:10.34). Kipling was second in the 100 fly (55.65). Bryan Remick was second in the 100 breast (1:15.57). Trevor Solberger was third in the 200 free (2:18.20), Dylan Popoff was third in the 100 free (59.62) and Brett Kolb was third in the 100 back (1:03.14).

The CHS girls failed to win a single event. Blanca Sosa was second in the 200 free (1:59.38) and Morgan Nelson was second in the 100 free (1:00.89). Cristina Saenz was third in the 200 IM in 2:30.57, Ashley Meyer was third in the 500 free (6:08.08) and Nicole Van Geel was third in the 100 back (1:06.83).
