Prep roundup: Douglas boys edge Spanish Springs

SPARKS — Michael Johnson scored 19 points Tuesday night to lead the Douglas High boys basketball team to a 42-41 victory against Spanish Springs.

Douglas (3-2 league, 5-10 overall) rallied in the fourth quarter to win the Northern Division I crossover game. Spanish Springs took a 34-30 lead into the fourth quarter.

Virginia City hammers Excel Christian

VIRGINIA CITY — The Muckers improved to 2-0 in league and 10-2 overall with an easy win over Excel Christian.

Clint Hess led a trio of double-digit scorers with 16, while Colt Hess added 11 and Christian Lindsay 10.

Tom Maurer’s club travels to Pyramid Lake for a Friday game.

VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL

Douglas rolls

SPARKS — Douglas (4-1 league, 12-3 overall) jumped out to a 12-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back on its way to a 38-14 win during the Northern Division I crossover contest against Spanish Springs (1-4, 4-11).

The Tigers turned the tables on the team that ended their season last year, 43-40, in the first round of the playoffs.

Dayton falls

SOUTH TAHOE — Dayton had its best offensive game of the year, but still fell 66-47 to South Tahoe. Angela Sikora had 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals, Christi Ricci scored nine points and Makayla Olson and Elvia Diaz each added seven points for the Dust Devils.

“We ran our offense well and really moved the ball around, opening up opportunities to score,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “Defensively we had a rough time matching up. We will be spending a lot of time in practice rebounding, that I can guarantee. I was very proud of my team’s hustle tonight, though we need to make sure we are coming out strong from jump ball to final buzzer.”

Whittell edges Sierra Lutheran

ZEPHYR COVE — Whittell drained seven 3-point field goals en route to a 40-37 two-overtime win over Sierra Lutheran on Tuesday.

Cali Benton scored 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Falcons.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

Carson rolls

RENO — Arianna Schmidt scored 13 points and Molly Otto added 10 points for Carson (11-3) which rolled to a 53-30 win over North Valleys.

Dayton loses

Elora Neep scored 14 points and Kayla Celedon added 14 points for Dayton in its 40-31 loss to South Tahoe.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson wins

Greg Wallace scored 16 points, Gurpreet Badhan had 16 points and Sevon Mandoki added 12 points for Carson (8-5) in its 62-58 win over North Valleys.

FROSH BOYS BASKETBALL

Dayton falls

DAYTON — Dayton had a shot to win as time expired in overtime but couldn’t convert in a 44-43 loss to South Tahoe.

Kolby Duncan led Dayton with 11 points. Brandon Evans and Colin Winebarger led the defensive effort while scoring nine points and eight points, respectively.

Carson comes back

RENO — Carson overcame a 14-point deficit at halftime to beat North Valleys 42-39.

Dawson Lamb scored all 17 of his points in the second half and Daniel Morrison added eight points for Carson.

Carson wins

RENO — Lauren Lemburg had a huge game with 23 points and five assists to lead Carson (8-5) to a 47-24 win over North Valleys.

Katelyn Morse scored nine points for CHS.
