Leftover Cuties perform in a week

The first 2015-2016 concert in the Barkley Theatre at the Art Center will feature the L.A.-based Americana band, The Leftover Cuties, on Sept. 26.

The group was formed in 2008 and since then they’ve performed at venues across the country and were featured on NPR where the host described their musical sounds as both “retro and refreshing” at the same time.

The innovative quartet is headed up by Shirli McAllen on lead vocals and ukulele whose sultry vocals have gained critical praise from many sources. Also along for the ride are Stuart Johnson (on drums, vocals and various forms of percussion), Mike Bolger (who contributes brass, accordion, keys and vocals to the mix) and Austin Nicholson (bass and vocals).

The group will hold a free conversation in the Center’s lounge to discuss their musical influences and styles at 3 p.m. on the day of the show. It’s a great chance to have an informal conversation with the musicians prior to their evening performance. The talk is open to the public.

The performance and conversation are also part of Tractors and Truffles, so if you want to make a day of it, it’s not too late to get your tickets for this farm-to-fork event. The activities include farm tours, wine and spirit tasting, a gourmet dinner at the Slanted Porch and, of course, the performance and conversation with the Leftover Cuties.

Coming next month at the Art Center will be a talk on Oct. 17 by artist Eunkang Koh on “Human Cache,” her show currently on view in the Classroom Gallery as well as a performance by the Hotclub of Cowtown on Oct. 23.

This dynamic ensemble won Western Swing Group of the Year at the Ameripolitan Music Awards and we’ll have more information on both the talk and performance in the coming weeks.
