DAYTON — The Dayton baseball team picked up its biggest win in quite a while, beating defending state champion Fallon in a wild game 18-12 Friday.

Dayton led 6-4 after just one inning on Zach Woitas’ 3-run double. The Dust Devils trailed 9-6 when they scored six runs to take a 12-9 lead in the third. Jacob Nelson hit a 2-run single and Trevor Burrows added an RBI single during the rally.

Jesse Schmidt’s 3-run home run extended Dayton’s lead to 16-10 in the fourth and Nick Hein’s RBI double and Burrows RBI sacrifice fly gave the Dust Devils an 18-11 lead in the sixth. Nelson went 4-for-5 with two RBI, Burrows was 2-for-4 with three RBi, Gage Duke went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Woitas had four RBI, Hein went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Isaac Von Schoff and Dylan Baker each had a hit and a run.

“When you host the defending state champs you hope that gets your players attention and today it did,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said. “I couldn’t be prouder. We came out swinging and played well defensively.”

Von Schoff pitched a complete game in tough conditions for the win. “I can’t say enough about Isaac’s pitching performance in the conditions he was faced with,” coach Burrows said. “He found his change up in the fourth inning and that’s really what carried him to the complete game win. His pitch count ran higher than we would of liked but he really wanted to finish the game.

“This might be the type of signature win we’ve been working towards. We have a ton of respect for Fallon’s athletics programs as a whole. This was a huge win for our kids, the program, and where we intend to go.”
