Dust Devils downed

RENO — For 26 minutes, the Dayton Dust Devils gave Lovelock all it could handle.

Unfortunately, high school basketball games are 32 minutes, and Dayton was missing in action for the final six minutes.

Lovelock scored the game’s final 19 points to walk away with a 46-25 nonconference victory over the Dust Devils Friday afternoon at the Reno Events Center.

The loss dropped Dayton to 1-3 on the year.

“We had to be in control of the tempo for the full four quarters,” Dayton coach Jason Santos said. “We just can’t go up and down with teams.”

The alternative is to be patient on offense, but that strategy only works if you take care of the ball and shoot a decent percentage.

Unfortunately, Dayton did neither.

Unofficially, the Dust Devils turned the ball over 20 times which led to 17 points. Dayton also shot 32 percent from the field.

The Dust Devils trailed 25-18 with 3 minutes left in the third quarter, but went on a 7-2 run to pull within 27-25 with approximately six minutes left in the contest. The surge was capped by Trevor Burrows’ three-point play. Burrows led Dayton with 11 points. He didn’t get much scoring help from his frontcourt teammate J.J. Ply, who went 2-for-11 and finished with a season-low five points.

William Gattrell, who led all scorers with 20 points, started the fourth quarter surge with a shot from the baseline and a three-point play to make it 34-25. Lane Condie and Derek Sandusky would also complete three-point plays down the stretch.

While Santos was unhappy with the final six minutes, he felt that his team played pretty well in the first half, especially in the second quarter when it outscored Lovelock, 14-8, to take an 18-16 lead in the locker room. Unofficially, Dayton went 6-for-9 in that stretch.

“I was pleased with most of it,” Santos said. “We should have been ahead by more at half; more than two pointss. We took a couple of bad shots after offensive rebounds. Once we got the ball we should have kicked it back out (ran more time off the clock), but we threw up a couple of 3-pointers.”

Lovelock rolls Dayton

RENO — The Mustangs outscored Dayton 49-15 over the final three quarters en route to an easy 60-29 win.

Dayton dropped to 0-7 entering its final two games at the Whittell Tournament today.

Dayton led 14-11 after one period thanks to eight points by Abby Sikora, who knocked down two 3-pointers. She finished with a team-best 14,

Unfortunately, it went downhill from there. Lovelock grabbed the lead with 2-minutes 33-seconds left in the half and never trailed the remainder of the game.

The Mustangs outscored Dayton 19-6 in the second quarter, 11-6 in the third and 19-3 in the fourth.

In Lovelock’s second-quarter outburst, the Mustangs forced Dayton to turn the ball over eight times which led to 14 points and a half-ending 17-2 run.

Offensive rebounding was a key, as Lovelock had three putbacks, two by Riley Jaramillo (13 points).

“Obviously our shots weren’t falling,” DHS coach Kelly Frantz said. “We talked about getting second and third shots at the offensive end. She (Jaramillo) wasn’t even their biggest player.”

Dayton trimmed Lovelock’s 30-20 halftime lead to 30-25 on a 3-pointer by Sikora and a bucket by Aleea McGill-Howe, but Lovelock finished the quarter with an 11-2 surge and a 41-26 advantage.

Taryn Houston led Lovelock with 16 points.

Carson 53, Pyramid Lake 18

Lauren Lemburg scored 18 points, and the Senators cruised to their third win of the season.The game was played with a running clock for the final nine minutes after Carson’s lead reached 35 points.

Pyramid Lake couldn’t handle Carson’s defensive pressure, turning the ball over 28 times which led to 25 points.

The Senators missed their first four shots, but hit their next five to grab a quick 11-0 lead.

Eight of the 11 points came after Pyramid turnovers. Lemburg had five and Dajarrah Navarro four in the opening surge.

After Pyramid got on the board with 3:47 left in the opening quarter, Carson went on a 15-0 run to build its lead to 26-2 midway in the second quarter. Lemburg had another trey and Ku’ulei Haul, making her season debut, had two buckets. She finished with seven points.

All 13 players played and 11 different CHS players scored.

JV Basketball

Spanish Springs 70, Carson 44

Jackson Sayre and Gavin McIntosh both scored 14 points as Carson fell to Spanish Springs. Colton Schafer chipped in 6. Carson is 2-4 on the season.
