Carson wrestlers finish fourth in tourney

WINNEMUCCA — Carson High’s wrestling squad finished fourth at the two-day Cody Louk Invitational.

Spanish Springs won the event followed by Reno and Lowry.

“Spanish Springs ran away with it,” said CHS assistant coach Nick Redwine. “They were a pinning machine and racked up a lot of bonus points.

“We got as high as third at one point and were close to second. We didn’t have enough guys in the championship, but it was a good showing.”

The Senators were without Brandon Basa, Sheldon Miller and Jake Roman, all of whom were taking ACTs on Saturday.

Both Basa and Miller had legitimate shots to win their respective weight classes, while Roman would have racked up some valuable team points.

The Senators got second-place showings from Kyle Rudy (132), Nathan Mersino (138) and Abel Carter (195). Carter lost 15-12 in the finals to Casey Preston of Spanish Springs.

“Preston won regionals last year, and Abel stayed right with him,” Redwine said. “It was a great match.”

Mersino lost 4-3 in his championship match.

John Rowe (220) and Jarod Butler (160) both finished fourth, Butler went 3-1 and Rowe went 3-2. At 170, Jesse Case went 4-2 and took fifth. Eli Thomas was fifth at 106. Johnny Lopez was sixth at 126.

Garrett Tibma went 2-2 at 126, Zach Bumby went 2-2 at 145 and Kellen McDermott went 2-2 at 182.

The Senators return to action Friday and Saturday at the prestigious Tournament of Champions at the Reno Event Center. Action gets under way at 9 a.m. both days.

Dayton girls get first win

ZEPHYR COVE — The Dayton girls snapped their seven-game losing streak with a 47-34 win over host Whittell in a consolation game of the Whittell Tournament.

Earlier in the day, Dayton lost 40-30 to Incline. Dayton travels to South Tahoe Tuesday at 6 p.m.

“It was a long time coming, but much deserved and earned,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “Our girls were pumped and a little relieved. The win was very important for us going into conference play next week.”

Aleea McGill-Howe led Dayton to the win over Whittell, scoring 15 points and grabbing four rebounds. Abby Sikora complemented her with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Dayton led 32-16 at the half, and the teams basically traded baskets over the final two quarters.

“We got everybody into the game and our intensity never let up,” Frantz said. “I was proud of my guards for pushing to get more deflections and steals, and we ran a lot more than I’ve seen us this season. Aleea stepped up and did an awesome job tonight.”

Against Incline, Dayton got off to a slow start and trailed 25-7. The Dust Devils outscored Incline by eight in the second half, but it wasn’t enough.

Elora Neep had 12 points and two rebounds, Sikora contributed seven, Jessie Ingham scored six and Kristina Mason added five.
