Prep Roundup: Carson High’s Kyle Rudy wins title in Winnemucca

WINNEMUCCA — Kyle Rudy claimed the 138-pound title to lead Carson to a seventh-place finish at the annual Cody Louck Invitational on Saturday at the Winnemucca Fairgrounds.

Jesse Case placed third at 182, Ariel Vega was third at 106 and Ty Evans placed fourth at 195.

Spanish Springs won the event with 288.5 followed by Lowry’s blue team 170, Lovelock 130.5, Fernley 127, Elko 118, Yerington 106, Carson 105, Reed 104 and Battle Mountain 103.

Rudy, who is 10-1 on the season, pinned Yerington’s Dante Reviglio in the finals.

“Kyle did really well,” Carson coach Nick Redwine said. “It seems like he’s figured out his offense a little bit and was really aggressive in all of his matches.

“He still has a lot to work on to get where we want him, but if he keeps working hard in practice I think we will be able to get him there. A big test will be the TOC this coming weekend.”

Case, meanwhile, was knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten. He did pin Aleki Pool of Sparks to finish third.

Vega, a freshman, beat Declan McClary, 5-0 for third place.

The annual TOC is Friday and Saturday at the Reno Event Center. It is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the country, and teams from Oregon, Washington, Oklahoma, California and New Mexico are all entered.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

GRANTS PASS 54, DOUGLAS 31

MINDEN — Ahdra Klinger, Ayssa Etheridge and Grace Gaither combined to score 35 points for Grants Pass, Ore., in its 54-31 non-league win at Douglas on Saturday afternoon.

Klingler scored 11 of her game-high 14 points in the second half to lead Grants Pass (3-2 overall). Etheridge added 11 points and eight rebounds, while Gaither had 10, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Douglas (3-4 overall, 1-1 league) was led by Ashlynn Campbell, who had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds (four offensive).

The Lady Cavers took a 17-11 first quarter lead and never trailed the rest of the way.

Dayton girls split

ZEPHYR COVE — The Dust Devils split their final two games at the Whittell Tournament on Saturday.

Incline got the best of Dayton, 56-38, for the second time, and the Dust Devils came back to beat North Tahoe, 50-17.

“We played a much faster-paced game and were more aggressive (against North Tahoe),” coach Kelly Frantz said.

Abby Sikora had 13 points and nine rebounds, and Tamia Powell had 12 points, 17 rebounds and five steals. Cassie Dickenson finished with 10 points.

Against Incline, Dayton fell behind by 14 at the half after shooting just 17 percent. Dayton did trim the lead to five in the third quarter before Incline took control.

Sikora had 16, 12 on 3-point shots. Dickenson finished with eight points and eight rebounds, and Shainey Vincent had six points.

“It was good to see Abby (Sikora) drop her shots and get some points,” Frantz said.

BOYS BASKETBALL

GRANTS PASS 51, DOUGLAS 36

MINDEN — Taylor Anderson scored 20 points to pace Grants Pass to a 51-36 win against Douglas on Saturday afternoon.

Anderson had six points and a critical steal in the final 69 seconds as Grants Pass (1-2 overall) broke up a four-point struggle at Randy Green Court. The junior guard converted that steal into a layup to make it 42-36 with 1:09 left to play and teammate Randy Clark followed with two more steals to help the Cavemen close out their win.

Douglas (2-5 overall, 2-0 league) was led by Austin Clutts with 10 points. The senior guard knocked down his second 3-pointer of the game to bring the Tigers back to 40-36 with 2:48 remaining.

Ian Ozolins grabbed 10 rebounds for Douglas.

Tayler Phillips also scored 10 points for Grants Pass.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson edges Spanish Springs

Joey Summers scored 10 points to lead Carson to a 67-62 win over Spanish Springs on Saturday morning at Carson High.

Nate Smothers and Christian Ortega added eight points apiece and Will Breeding contributed 12 rebounds and four blocked shots. Seth Griffith turned in a good defensive effort.
