Carson baseball falls to Gorman

HENDERSON — Carson High’s baseball team has run into two very good pitchers in the first two days of he Bishop Gorman Easter Invitational.

On Wednesday, Carson’s offense managed just four hits, and on Thursday the offense collected two hits off Bishop Gorman’s Zach Grech in a 10-0 mercy rule loss at Bishop Gorman High School.

The loss puts Carson against Alta-Utah today at 4. The game will be played on the UNLV campus.

Grech, who’s headed to Stanford, struck out six and didn’t walk a batter. Carson went three up and three down in four of its five at-bats.

“Their pitcher was very good,” Carson coach Bryan Manoukian said. “He was filthy. We did a better job of not striking out. We went from 12 to six. We put the ball in play; hit some hard groundballs in the infield.

“This is a good learning experience for us. This is what we came down here for, and we’ll be better for it.”

Grech retired the first 11 batters he faced before Kyle Krebs broke up the perfect game with a two-out single to right. John Holton followed with a single, the last CHS hit of the day, sending Krebs to second. Jace Keema flied out to right to end the threat.

Gorman scored the only runs it would need in the second off CHS starter/loser Jared Barnard.

Nick Davis doubled, went to third on an infield out and scored on Braxton Werhle’s double to right. Marques Paige drove in Werhle with a single.

The Gaels added five in the fourth and three in the fifth.

“Jared didn’t throw that bad,” Manoukian said. “He was very competitive the first two innings, but they got to him in the third. He got the ball up, and that’s when he got hurt.”
