Carson City Library to open earlier

The Carson City Library is adjusting its hours to open earlier on weekdays and is staying open for fewer hours on Sunday.

The decision comes after the library reviewed the results of a survey sent out to its patrons.

“Our biggest request was to open earlier on weekdays,” said Natalie Wood, creative learning manager for the Carson City Library. “However, we definitely have usage on Sundays, so we didn’t want to completely take that day away.”

The compromise is to open weekdays at 10 a.m., while reducing Sunday’s hours to noon-4 p.m. The changes will go into effect starting Thursday.

The move comes after a change in June to open the library on Sundays to better accommodate students and their families who needed more flexible hours.

Without added funding, library officials decided to reduce hours on the other days to allow for the expense of the extra day.

Wood said the library conducted the survey to gauge the community’s reaction to the changes.

“Being a public resource, we serve the community so we need their input on what they want,” she said. “We want the community’s needs to be reflected in what we do.”

Wood said the transition is expected to be an easy one, for everyone involved.

“We have people waiting at the door to open every day,” she said. “And the staff’s response to the survey matched the community’s.”

The library will continue to offer classes for children through adults, including storytime and Lego Club and MineCraft.

Classes are also offered in basic computing, social media and foreign language.

“We have a wide array of resources for the community to utilize they otherwise wouldn’t be able to get as a free service,” Wood said. “Our other events and activities build community partnerships and collaborations. You can make relationships on a personal level as well as a professional level.”
