Prep roundup: Behind Lyons, Douglas roars to victory

MINDEN — Connor Lyons scored the go-ahead basket with 26 seconds remaining and then Douglas came up with two defensive stops in the final 10 seconds to preserve its 56-55 Sierra League victory over Manogue.

Zach Kellar sank the first of two free throws with 40.5 seconds left and then Alex Tessmann scrambled to rebound the miss to set the stage for the Tigers to rally back in a game that saw nine lead changes, six of which came in the fourth quarter.

In addition to handing Manogue its first league loss, Douglas (6-3 league, 8-11 overall) gained a measure of redemption for a 72-45 loss to the Miners on Dec. 6 at the Wild West Shootout in Reno. Manogue (15-4, 7-1) saw its six-game win streak snapped.

Michael Johnson scored 15 points, while Kellar added 12 and Lyons 10 to lead a balanced attack for the Tigers. Tessmann also dished out five assists and Lyons contributed four steals.

Kellar knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and Johnson connected from beyond the arc to help stake the Tigers to an 11-5 lead in the opening four minutes. Douglas shot 7-for-17 from 3-point range as a team.

Derek Novsek led all scorers with 19 points while teammate Justin De Geus scored 18 to lead Manogue.

Douglas plays at Damonte Ranch on Friday.

VC knocks off Dayton

DAYTON — Clint Hess scored 10 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter to lead Virginia City to a 50-47 come-from-behind win over the host Dust Devils.

VC led 11-8 after one, but trald 23-19 at the half and 35-32 after three quarters.

Sam McCain added 14 points for VC while Jon Joyner led Dayton with 13 and Dylan Munroe added 12.

Carson comeback falls short

RENO — Despite a furious fourth-quarter comeback, Carson High’s girls dropped a 55-46 decision to Galena Tuesday night.

The loss dropped Carson to 5-4 in league while Galena improved to 3-6.

Carson fell behind by 10 at the half and 14 after three quarters, 43-29.

The Senators went on a 12-2 surge to open the fourth quarter, chopping the lead to 45-41 with 2:31 remaining. Kayla Aikins scored two baskets, while Michelle Perry and Maddie Preston contributed a basket apiece. Carson had two chances to cut the deficit down even more, but Aikins missed the front end of a one-and-one, and then Teresa Boehmer misfired on a 3-pointer. Galena then went on an 8-1 run to put the game on ice.

Perry led Carson with 14 points, Preston added 10, Boehmer had eight and Aikins seven.

Manogue 45, Douglas 34

MINDEN — Manogue moved out to a 20-3 lead midway through the second quarter on its way to winning a showdown between Sierra League leaders that was dominated by cold shooting and turnovers on both sides,

Manogue (12-5, 7-1) moved into sole possession of first-place with the win. The Miners led 27-10 at halftime and 36-18 at the end of three quarters.

Douglas (15-4 overall, 7-2 league) only shot 12-for-40 from the field and 9-for-29 from the free throw line.

Leonna Mortimer scored 13 points, 10 of which came in the fourth quarter, to lead the Tigers offensively. Corryne Millett also scored 10.

Katie Turner, a 5-7 sophomore, scored 14 points and Breezi Holt 11 for the Miners, who were coming off a Monday night game against Bishop O’Dowd at the St. Mary’s Martin Luther King Showcase in Stockton.

Dayton wins thriller

DAYTON — Angela Sikora had a huge game with 27 points, five rebounds and four steals and went 5-of-6 from the foul line to lead the Dust Devils to a 44-39 win over Virginia City.

Dayton erased a 20-9 deficit by outscoring Virginia City 24-3 in the third quarter to take a 33-23 lead.

Christi Ricci had four points and two steals, Kristina Mason had four points and five rebounds and Elvia Diaz added two points and seven rebounds for Dayton.

“It was a tremendous effort, a total team effort,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said.

“I am so proud of how my girls came out in the second half and really pulled together. They came out firing from all cylinders.”

Sierra Lutheran rolls

Cali Benton had a big night, posting a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead Sierra Lutheran to an easy 51-17 win over Excel Lutheran. Grace Bonafede had eight points and six rebounds, Jee You Benton had six points, Amy Westre had six rebounds, Aleyna Gilson had four steals and Emman Herron had five assists for the Falcons.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson rolls

Gurpreet Badham hit seven three-pointers on his way to scoring 22 points and Greg Wallace and Sevon Mandoki each added 21 points as Carson (10-7) routed Galena 83-51.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

Carson 45, Galena 37

Anya Woodbury and Sophia Rudy each scored 11 points and Camiell Simpson added 10 points to lead Carson (14-3, 8-1) to the win over Galena.

Dayton edges VC

Kayla Caledon scored 18 points to lead Dayton to a 28-24 win over Virgnia City.

Carson wins big

Lauren Lemburg scored 10 points, Katelyn Morse and Dajarrah Navarro each had eight points, Abbey Paulson had six points and four assists, Blanca Sosa had six points and Jazzy Peralta added three points and four assists as Carson (12-5) routed Galena 45-11.

WRESTLING

Carson crowns three champs

Abel Carter, Sam Haight and Alex Honeycutt walked away with titles at last weekend’s North Valleys JV Tournament.

Carter (160) went 2-0 with two pins and Honeycutt (170) went 4-0 with four pins and Haight (heavyweight) went 2-0 with a pin.

Kyle Rudy (120) and Seth Reichelt (145) took second place. Rudy went 3-1 with three pins and Reichelt went 2-1 with two pins. Jesse Case (152) placed third at 3-1 and Jake Roman (126) took third with a 3-2 mark.
