The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: Congratulations to all those involved in putting on the Carson City Fair and to all the youth who showed livestock.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Dayton High graduate J.J. Ply for winning the 2017 USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic 17-18 decathlon championship at University of Kansas’ Rock Chalk Park on Tuesday afternoon with a personal-best 7,111 points.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City native Tony Marsella, who plays Spider-Man at the Northern California Shriner’s Hospital.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Derek Jackson and Daniel Tingle for the help they provided to firefighters in building a firebreak alongside Highway 395 near Mica Drive in the effort to battle a fire there. And to all the firefighters who have been kept busy in battling wildfires throughout the summer. Because of their effort, so many lives and property have been saved this summer.
