Churchill County High School hosted the All-State Small Schools Band & Orchestra the end of April.

The Nevada Music Educators Association (NMEA) classifies small schools as 1,500 students or less and are usually located in more rural areas.

The musicians included 155 students from 19 schools (102 in the band and 53 in the orchestra) across Nevada.

Tom Fleming, CCHS music director, said he’s pleased that with the high school’s new performing arts center the school is able to host such large events and groups.

Students sent out audition tapes in November and were later selected among other honor band participants two months ago for a seat in the gathering, giving them time to rehearse as well.

Jason Smith, Fernley High School music director and Nevada Music Educators Association chair of events, was in attendance with his students and noted the school’s musicians are traveling to Washington, D.C. this summer to take part in the National Independence Day Parade. He added they raised $150,000 in less than a year so they could attend.
