Fallon Daily Bread served more than 100 people Monday night at its annual Thanksgiving dinner, while two veterans’ organizations plan dinners for later in the week.
Churchill County High School’s Junior ROTC served the meals and assisted with cleanup. Ron Evans, a longtime volunteer of Fallon Daily Bread, said most of the turkey was donated by Christian Life Center, which held its community-wide Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday.
“Nothing gets wasted,” Evans said.
Daily Bread, a ministry of Epworth United Methodist Church that serves meals on Mondays and Thursdays, will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. Evans said this allows the volunteers and staff to be with their families.
Prior to dinner being served, Evans and JROTC Cadet Hannah Rochna conducted a missing person remembrance. Evans read names of community people who have died while Rochna rang a bell for each name.
American Legion Post 16 will deliver Meals on Wheels dinners Thursday since the William N. Pennington Life Center (senior center) will be closed. Military personnel and community members wishing to deliver meals or prepare meals for delivery should arrive at the hall, 90 N. Ada St., between 8:30-9 a.m.
Volunteers will pack food into containers and then drive different routes to deliver hot meals to the county’s senior citizens. The American Legion seeks about 30 volunteers but provides both volunteers and the money to buy turkeys and all the fixings. Their annual Thanksgiving dinner for the community is from 11 a.m-1 p.m.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Annual Thanksgiving dinner, which is open to veterans, their families and friends on Saturday, is from 2-4 p.m. at the VFW Hall on 405 S. Taylor St.
For those not staying in Fallon for the Thanksgiving holiday, the weather forecast for Northern Nevada is calling for unusually warm days with highs in the 60s and lows in the upper 30s. The weatherman is calling for a 10 percent chance of rain today.
Temperatures also will be in the 60s for the valley of Northern California with lows in the upper 40s to lower 50s with a 10 percent chance of rain for each day except for Sunday, which may see a 40 percent probability of precipitation.
Most businesses are closed on Thursday, and state, county and city government offices are closed on both Thursday and Friday. Federal government offices are closed Thursday. Both post offices resume their regular hours on Friday and Saturday. Naval Air Station Fallon operates on its holiday schedule.
Financial institutions are closed on Thanksgiving but check with your bank or credit union for any closures on Friday.
Churchill County schools are closed for three days, today through Friday as is Oasis Academy. No classes are scheduled at Western Nevada College for three days.
