Penitential Legislators. Our livery stables were extensively patronized yesterday by Senators and Assemblymen who had “a call” to visit their old constituents at the State Prison. We don’t know exactly what they ate and drank, but from the Fourth of July style of traveling of some of the teams coming back, we judge that something must have happened out of the usual course of prison fare and prison discipline.

The Chinese are getting in their work in fine style in the lottery business in this city. They have two drawings a day. The racket is run by tickets all covered with squares and the Chinese man makes the rounds every day to peddle tickets. You pay ten cents for a ticket, and then you dot the square with a brush of ink and make seven marks. This is a very fascinating game and the ladies love it.

100 years ago

200,000 men are out. All industry at northern port, Seattle, at a standstill. The general manager of the shipping board says workers must return to labors before grievances will be considered.

70 years ago

Democratic Assemblyman Don Crawford of Washoe County told members of the lower house this morning that the acoustics of the assembly chamber were bad and asked that something be done about it. Speaker Peter Burke then appointed him as chairman of an investigative committee and instructed him to name two others to make a survey. Shortly thereafter seats will be arranged in the lower house in a semi circle around the rostrum starting Monday.

Introduction Monday of a bill in the Assembly to broaden Nevada’s abortion law signaled the beginning of what may be one of the most emotionally charged and vehemently contested issues of the legislative session.

After a rough day Friday, Carson City crawled beneath its blanket of nine inches of snow and stayed there Saturday. Sheriff’s Office personally responded to more than 40 accidents on Friday.

Joe Coburn the champion will hold a grand sparring exhibition tomorrow night at the Theater. He is said to be a perfect wonder of agility, muscular development and “science.” Many of us who profess horror at fistile exhibitions will be tempted to go and look on. Well, it is not wicked to look on at other people’s sinning!

The Kirmess. The Kirmess last night was a gorgeous success. The grand march and the stately Minnet danced by elegantly-clad dames and courtiers was encored so that it had to be done over again.

Charles Bondiette has gone to Benton, Ca., to attend to the funeral of a relative.

Eighty families said isolated in Humboldt County. Relief caravan to leave Stewart on aid mission. Eighty Indian families are isolated and a caravan of food and clothing will leave Stewart tomorrow on a relief mission to McDermitt.

Schools and public hospitals would not have to designate areas for smokers under a bill approved Friday by a Senate committee. SB25 was approved on a 6-1 vote by members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The Small Pox patients at the County Pest-house are getting along favorably, although they are very seriously affected by the confluent form of that terrible malady. We hope to hear very soon from Dr. Thompson.

Custer Post No. 5, G.A.R. will hold their annual Camp Fire at Armory Hall on Tuesday evening Feb. 12, on which occasion there will be the usual pork and beans, and coffee, served on tin plates and cups, songs and recitations, and a Grand Ball. The Old Boys in Blue are noted for the magnificent entertainments they have given in the past.

Assemblyman Louis Stodieck, after an absence of several days visiting his home in Douglas county, has returned to his legislative duties. Mr. Stodieck was called home on account of the serious illness of his three children.

Justice of the Peace W.E. Dunfield’s report to the county clerk for January showed in his first month of office he handled six justice court cases, five recorder’s cases and two civic actions. Fines totaled $545.

Assemblyman Harry Reid, D-Las Vegas, said today he’ll introduce legislation calling for a three-day waiting period in the purchase of concealable weapons.

While California considers tighter gun control laws following recent schoolyard slayings, neighboring Nevada lawmakers are deciding whether to remove firearm restrictions statewide. A person already can buy a handgun in 16 of Nevada’s mostly rural counties with no questions asked except, “Do you want bullets with that?” Police say.
