Silver Dollars and Wooden Nickels is a weekly feature in the Appeal’s Opinion pages in which the Appeal gives Silver Dollars to those who deserve recognition and occasionally a Wooden Nickel to those who deserve criticism.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson High cheerleading team for placing third in the nation in the Co-Ed Varsity Show Cheer Non-Tumbling Advanced Division at the USA Spirit Nationals last weekend in Anaheim, Calif.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson High robotics team, Cyber Mafia, for winning the Inspire Award and the state title at the Nevada State First Tech Challenge Championships. The team also received an invitation to compete in the First Championships in Houston in April. Also to Nevan McIlwee and Nanami Duncan, who were named Dean’s List Award semifinalists, with Duncan moving on to the next level as a finalist.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson High Orienteering team for taking third at the NJROTC National competition.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the University of Nevada basketball team for finishing off a regular season sweep of UNLV with an 89-73 win over the Rebels on Wednesday at Lawlor Events Center.
