Prep roundup: Carson High baseball sweeps doubleheader

There was trouble for River City — and Foresthill as well when it came to playing the Carson High baseball team.

CHS swept the two California teams in a doubleheader on Saturday, beating River City 6-1 and Foresthill 13-3 at Ron McNutt Field.

Against River City, Vernon Painter provided the Senators with an outstanding effort on the mound. He allowed one run on just two hits while striking out six over five innings to pick up the win. Max Fontaine pitched two scoreless innings of relief for Carson.

Carson took a 1-0 lead in the first on Delsin Roberts’ sacrifice fly. In the second, CHS scored three runs to take a 4-1 lead on the strength of RBI singles by Kahle Good and Kobe Morgan and a sacrifice fly by Garritt Benavidez. The Senators had nine hits in the game, led by Good and Morgan who each had two hits.

CHS 13, Foresthill 3

Against Foresthill, Casey Martensen had a big day, going 4-for-4 for Carson. Martensen singled in the first, singled in the third, singled in the fourth, and doubled in the fifth.

Carson scored four runs in the third to take a 5-2 lead. Roberts had a two-run single and Jade Stotts had a two-run double during the inning.

The Senators scored six runs in the fourth to break the game open and take an 11-2 lead. Martensen, Benavidez, Josh Ingram, Aiden Maldanado and Justin Nussbaumer all had RBIs during the inning. Carson scored two runs in the fifth to win the game by the mercy rule, with Martensen hitting a double during the inning.

Quinn Overland was the winning pitcher for Carson, striking out five over 4 2/3 innings. Damian Branco picked up the last out in the fifth for CHS.

Carson had 13 hits. Ingram and Nussbaumer each had two hits for CHS.

SOFTBALL

Fallon 12, Dayton 7

Fallon scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 7-7 tie on its way to beating Dayton on Friday.

Dayton tied the game 7-7 in the fifth when it scored one run on the strength of Marissa Hein’s single. The Dust Devils scored three runs in the fourth to take a 6-5 lead. Gabrielle Dickenson, Hein and Julie Rogacs all had an RBI during the inning.

Tamia Powell and Elizabeth Vincent each had two hits for Dayton.

TRACK

CHS has strong weekend

The Carson High boys and girls track teams had another impressive weekend at three meets. Among the highlights was Abby Pradere’s performance at the 79th Nike Chandler Rotary Meet in Arizona. Pradere finished seventh in the 800 meters in the elite division with a season best 2 minutes, 16.28 seconds. Pradere also took 16th in the 1,600 in 5:11.32.

Carson also had several top performers at the high level Silver State Invitational, going up against many of Southern Nevada’s top performers.

Carson’s top performer was Ashley Britt, who placed third in the 300 hurdles with an outstanding time of 47.77. Britt also took 11th in the 100 hurdles in 17.05.

In addition, CHS received an outstanding effort from Zach Sever in the 1,600 as Sever finished fifth in a season best time of 4:40.38. Also for Carson, Ben Granados posted two outstanding times in the 100 and 200, placing 11th in both events.

He finished the 100 in a season best 11.29 and the 200 in a season best 22.88. Granados was also ninth in the long jump at 20 feet, 2 inches.

Other top performers for Carson included Jakob Heller, who was seventh in the triple jump at 40-11 1/2; Ethan Byasse, who placed 11th in the 3,200 in 10:31.69; and Hunter Rauh, who was 17th in the 800 in 2:10.00.

For Carson’s girls, Merce Tarrayo placed seventh in the shot put at 33-10 and ninth in the discus at 100 feet even,

Finally, Carson also had a number of solid efforts at the 47th annual Fallon Elks Invitational. Among the top performers for the boys were Misrael Becerra who took third in the 100 in 11.83; Gryphon Mattias who placed third in the 400 in 55.05.

For Carson’s girls, Kathryne Oppedahl placed second in the 400 in 1:04.36; Gabrielle Lopez took second in the 1600 in 5:43.22; Taryn Encinas tied for third in the high jump and Erica Basa was fourth in the triple jump at 32-10 1/2.

In the relays, Basa, Hailey Ponczoch, Oppedahl and Encinas placed second in the 4x100 in 54.33 and the same group took third in the 4x200 in 1:54.14.
