Big Wood Ranch: Lette & Van Gorder have a “wood ranch” where they employ 580 men, mostly Chinamen, paying per cord for cutting wood. It is situated in the vicinity of Genoa on the headwaters of the Carson. Then it is floated from the end of the cause, to the river through a ditch a mile and half in length—to Empire City, a few miles east of Carson. (Enterprise)

The stentorian cry of “hot corn,” by Clem Berry at night time, is again heard in the land.

The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Curtis of the Valley View House, died.

The prisoners of the County Jail seem to be the happiest fellows alive. They can be heard singing all hours of the day.

Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant: Joseph L. Covington, son of Lincoln and Mary Covington, was promoted by the Douglas County Composite Squadron to the rank of cadet second lieutenant. He joined the air patrol in 1997 with a goal to be an Air Force officer and to fly C-130s.

First marriage in Elko: Justice Mayhugh was called upon to perform the marriage ceremony between a youthful maiden of about 15 summers and a stalwart frontiersman of huge corporal dimensions. Both were with an emigrant train going to the Colorado River to make their future home. (Elko Independent)

Pantlind: A private letter from Bodie says that “Pant” has struck oil. He left here with lots of “spurs” and now he has “dipped” into a bonanza. He is engaged in fitting up a “roasting” works which were to have gone into operation; in fact, Pant has bought a restaurant.

Ducks: Ducks are scarce at Washoe Lake. There is no water in the tule fields at the north end of the lake. Another reason is that Theo. Winters has a great flapping windmill which would scare ducks 1,000 miles away.
