Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., on Wednesday announced two grants totaling $1.4 million in Community Policing Development dollars.
She said the Justice Department funding will provide training in de-escalation techniques designed to keep officers and the public safe.
“Nevada police work hard to keep our communities safe, which is why I have always made it a priority to support them,” she said.
Cortez Masto, a former Nevada attorney general, has worked to support police and to ensure that state and local governments maintain essential services including police and first responders.
The funding will provide $1.25 million to the Nevada System of Higher Education to fund a regional de-escalation training center and another $162,900 in grants for a similar purpose to North Las Vegas.
