Senator Stewart is the man who introduced the bill to punish wife beaters. As a reward for his interest the Gold Hill News has it that one of the most beautiful and accomplished ladies of Virginia City has written to the Senator offering her hand in marriage. His bill to prevent cruelty to women in Nevada has won her affections.

The railroad accident (continued). Arriving at the place of accident the locomotive was found lying on the left side of the road pretty well demolished, and the express car on the right side, turned half-way around, pretty well shattered. The remaining cars, mail and luggage, smoking, passenger and sleeper, did not jump the track. No other damage was done except for broken steps on the smoker. (Continued)

There were 93 arrests made in Virginia during the month just closed. More than one-half of these were for being drunk, disorderly and asleep on the streets.

140 years ago

The railroad accident (continued) Engineer Tom Clarke opened the throttle valve to speed of about 40 mph in order to cut through the snow. The plow penetrated through the drift and struck a plank of the crossing, with the locomotive left the track about 160 feet. Clarke and Robinson went over with the engine, both injured along with two in the express car and four Indians, who were riding on the tender. Three did not survive.

The regular monthly statement of the weather has been received at this office and form the record furnished to the Bureau the month of January leaves the record rather shy on moisture. According to the record, only one-third of an inch fell, while the average for the month is 2.03 inches. Even the wind failed to blow to any extent.

A small airplane believed to belong to the U.S. Army crashed into Marla Bay at 10:55 this forenoon, after the pilot apparently had been unsuccessful in seeking a place to land on the east shore of Lake Tahoe. Details of aviators in the plane await army headquarter orders.

With an eye toward working to amend Nevada’s tax laws to benefit Carson City residents, Carson City Assessor Homer Rodriguez today filed for his fifth term as assessor.

On account of the water strike made in the Bullion on Thursday evening all work is stopped at the present on the 1600- and 1700-foot levels. The water is very hot, and is said to come from the ore vein on the first level named. The water is being pumped through the Imperial incline.

In Brief. The Carson over at Empire is frozen over, making skating good. The sleighing was superbly fine yesterday. All the sleighs in town were on the go during the day and evening.

The recent storms from the north left about six inches of snow in this city, but Bridgeport was given only two or three inches which melted readily. At Lunday, less than a foot fell in the canyon but the fall was much greater at the mine and the driving was bad. At Bodie it has been noticed at 20 below zero at different times, but the lowest was 28 — Bodie Index.

The Army plane that crashed in Marla Bay, Lake Tahoe, yesterday forenoon was dragged close to shore and the bodies of two men, wearing Army uniforms, were removed from the cockpit at one o’clock this afternoon.

Selection of the Dayton High School mascot and colors will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. in the high school gym. The final three choices will be submitted to the Lyon County School Board on Feb. 23.

The Millennium Membership Quilt is in the hand-quilting stage by volunteers from the Carson Valley Historical Society and Carson Valley Quilt Guild. The quilt will be unveiled March 3 and be on display at the Carson Valley Museum.
