P.E.O Chapter D has awarded two $1,000 scholarships to recent high school graduates Jaylee McEwen and Kyla Trotter.

The Phyllis McCallum Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior. The award is based on an application including an essay the students write about what education means to them as a woman.

The scholarship was created in remembrance of Phyllis McCallum, a long-time and instrumental member of Chapter D. Upon her passing her family started a scholarship in her memory. Since that time, Chapter D has continued with fundraising efforts to afford the opportunity to keep awarding the scholarship in McCallum's name.

"Presenting scholarships locally and contributing to national and international projects is an exciting time for our P.E.O. Chapter D membership,” said Chapter D President Sandy White. “It is a reflection that all our meetings, planning, and fundraising has made a difference.”

White thanked the scholarship committee for reading the essays from each candidate and narrowing the selections to two individuals through a confidential process.

“We wish Jaylee, Kyla and the other fine young women who applied nothing but the best,” White said. “We know some very bright futures lie ahead and we are proud to have been a small part of that."

As part of the international Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.), Chapter D has been helping female students achieve their educational goals in Fallon for almost 100 years.
