Fall sports jump back into action this weekend for Churchill County High School and Oasis Academy.

Aside from football, all sports are allowed to hold practices starting Saturday with competitions coming as soon as two weeks later.

But the start of fall sports this weekend isn’t the only big news.

This year, the new realignment goes into effect, which affects Oasis Academy more than Fallon. The NIAA voted to move Oasis Academy up to the 2A even though the Bighorns struggled to compete against 1A schools. Oasis Academy presented a detailed argument to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, but the school lost its appeal and will compete against schools with greater enrollment numbers.

For Fallon, nothing much has changed except for football where several Reno schools are no longer in the 3A and Dayton is playing as an independent. Wooster, North Valleys and Hug will compete with Galena, Douglas and Carson in the new Class 5A Division III, which aces the Greenwave out of a home game against North Valleys.

Greenwave fall practice

Brooke Hill’s Greenwave football program, which will have a freshman team for the first time in four years, started the heat acclimation period Wednesday and the players will go through practices leading up to the program’s first scrimmage on Aug. 11 at Carson.

Fallon opens the season on the road Aug. 18 at Reed.

Practices start at 2 p.m. each day except on Saturday, which is at 8 a.m. Two-a-day practices are on Friday, Monday and Wednesday. The freshman team scrimmages at 3 p.m. next Saturday in Carson City followed by the JV at 5 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.

The Greenwave volleyball program will have tryouts on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. at the main gym. Tryouts will conclude on Monday from 4:30-6 p.m. Fallon begins its season on Aug. 18 with the annual two-day Yerington tournament.

The girls soccer team will have mandatory training Saturday from 7:30-9:30 a.m. at the Lahontan fields behind the elementary school’s playground. Tryouts are on Monday and Tuesday from 3:30-6 p.m.

The girls golf team will start its season on Monday at 4 p.m. at the golf course. A parent meeting will be on Tuesday after practice at 6 p.m. All practices will start at 4 p.m. next week.

The boys and girls cross country team will open the season on Monday with practice at 3 p.m. in front of the main gym by the teacher’s parking lot.

The boys and girls tennis teams will start practice on Monday from 3:30-5 p.m. Practices will run every day next week except for Friday. Practice will be Monday through Friday starting Aug. 14.

Games and meets for soccer, tennis, golf and cross country don’t begin until later this month.

Information for boys soccer practices was not available at press time but will be listed on the school’s athletics department’s Facebook page.

Oasis Academy fall practice

Oasis Academy Assistant Athletics Director Amanda Gilbertson said the school hasn’t finalized practice information for its fall lineup, which includes cross country, girls golf and volleyball. She encourages parents to visit the Bighorns on social media and on their website for information.
