UPDATE, 8:44 a.m. Wednesday

NV Energy is moving forward with a de-energization for approximately 30 customers in the north Genoa area, based on dangerous weather conditions and high winds. NV Energy will begin de-energizing customers at approximately 10 a.m. Additional customers in south Genoa, Clear Creek and Jacks Valley will remain in a warning.

The proactive outage is expected to last until approximately 5 p.m., depending on how weather conditions change. NV Energy will continue to communicate with affected customers as conditions change.

INITIAL STORY

NV Energy announced a public safety outage management warning for the South Carson and Genoa areas on Tuesday afternoon, based on rapidly changing weather conditions, according to a release from utility. The latest weather forecasts show high winds.

An outage may affect approximately 500 NV Energy customers beginning at approximately 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, lasting until approximately 5 p.m.

During a proactive outage – also known as a Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) event – NV Energy will proactively de-energize power for customers in high-risk zones to help protect the community and environment from wildfires, the release said.

This potential proactive outage will impact a small portion of the total number of NV Energy customers in the South Carson and Genoa areas. The proactive outage will be adjusted or canceled if weather conditions change.

Potentially impacted customers have been notified via phone, text, email messages and social media. NV Energy will continue to monitor fire weather conditions and will provide regular updates on the status of the outage.

The outage timeframe includes the duration of the weather event and an estimate of how long it will take crews to inspect the lines for damage, vegetation or debris to begin safely restoring power. The restoration time may change based on weather conditions or if crews must make repairs to equipment.

A PSOM event is a key measure of defense to help protect the community and environment from wildfires. During a PSOM event, power is shut off for safety in order to help prevent power lines or debris blowing into power lines and other equipment from causing a wildfire when certain environmental conditions are met.
